1960s/70s Turnidge of London teak bureau
Turnidge of London are known for their teak cabinets and bars , but this is the first time we’ve seen a bureau by them . The smiley handle is a design feature they used on a number of pieces , and we currently have a display cabinet which has it on the drawers . This handle is similar to one designed by Kai Kristiansen of Denmark on various chests .
We have a mid 1970s Turnidge of London catalogue , and there is no bureaus shown in it . Bureaus are more likely to be found in the UK than in Europe , and most of the British ones we see are rather poor quality unlike this one . Turnidge pieces are always nicely made with dovetailed drawers , so they wouldn’t have been cheap at the time . We think they are rather under-rated currently , probably because they don’t seem to have produced sideboards and bedroom furniture .
It’s quite shallow for a bureau , and this makes for a nice slim elegant profile .
In good vintage condition , with no obvious marks or damage . Original key missing so our restorer will be making a new key that will work .
