2 Rare A Younger chests/sideboards c 1960s . These are a bit of a mystery as they don’t look like anything we’ve ever seen by this top quality British maker . They’re labelled for A Younger , and the original owner bought them back in the 1960s as bedroom chests , but they would work equally well as small sideboards or TV stands in a living room . We bought them together , but are selling them separately .
From the mid-1950s to the late 60s the talented John Herbert was Younger’s designer . He was joined c 1967 by another designed called A.R.Pledge . These pieces are a totally different style and look to anything they designed , but we do have 1 piece of Younger furniture that was designed by the famous Danish designer Jens Risom under license so they did occasionally use other designers .
The tops look to be solid elm , whereas the rest of the carcase looks to be a type of walnut . The shape and the walnut , along with the heavy foot design would indicate a late 1950s manufacture , but the square split handles look very similar to those designed for the G Plan Danish range by Ib Kofod Larsen in 1962/3 ! .
They had some marks and signs of wear after some 50 years of use , so we’ve had them cleaned and re-polished . Les our restorer has emphasised the lovely handle design by making them slightly darker than they were originally , and polished the tops to show off the grain of the “elm ” . We think they look stunning and really unusual .
The quality is great as you’d expect from A Younger c 1955-65 and they’ll not have been cheap when new . Perhaps they were made for an Exhibition or as trial pieces to show trade buyers , and then never put into full production .
As often with A Younger the label is on the back of the back of a drawer . Many of the top independent shops like Heals of London and Chapmans of Newcastle didn’t want makers own labels on pieces , so perhaps that’s why Younger put their’s often in a concealed place !
