Early 1960’s French walnut tall chest of drawers by A Younger
It’s in lovely vintage condition and is a great size at 76cms wide 109cms high and 45.5cms deep . It’s shown in one of the photos with a matching low chest which came with it , which we’ve listed separately . It’s a lovely colour and is slightly less faded than the lower one .
As with all pieces made by the up-market maker A Younger at the time it was designed by their very accomplished designer John Herbert . The earliest catalogue we have is from 1964 and by then it had been replaced by a model called The Russell with wood handles so it pre-dates then . As with many A Younger pieces the label is only to be found by taking the top drawer completely out and looking at the back .
A Younger were always more expensive than larger mid-market companies such as G Plan and their chests are always that bit larger as they were designed for more affluent owners !
We’ve priced this chest at £575 and the lower one at £475 or both for £950 .
All European walnuts are the same species , but A Younger described pieces as being French walnut and we believe this relates to the cut and use of the veneers . In the 1930’s and 50’s a lot of highly figured walnut veneers were used by British makers , but this did not suit the simpler lines of contemporary designs like this , but this “French walnut ” certainly did .
