Early 1960s Meredew tola chest of drawers . We’ve recently found a 1961 Meredew catalogue where this range was described as ” The new Meredew look in Tola ” , and ” Here the designer has used the warm colour of African Tola veneer . Based on the original conception of the Oak with Colour pieces , this new Meredew Range is designed by a leading Italian Designer , and has all the appeal of that school of design ” . The leading Italian Designer isn’t named unfortunately !
We bought it along with various quality Danish and British pieces that were mainly bought at Heals of London between c 1960 and 1968 . In the 1961 catalogue it was priced at £23 7 Shillings . This is just over £490 in today’s terms based on inflation , so our price of £285 offers great value , particularly as you won’t find this quality of manufacture and materials available new today for £500 , particularly if made in the UK .
The veneer is tola , and the base has an ebonised finish . The drawer interiors look to be afomosia , and of good quality construction . In good vintage condition , we will give it a light clean and polish .
Materials: tola , afromosia and ebonised wood
