Early 1960s teak chest of chest of drawers by Butilux
A nice quality piece by this little known British maker . We’ve seen other pieces by them around from the 1950s and early 1960s , usually bedroom pieces like wardrobes and dressing tables . Always nicely made but unlike this piece not always so stylish . We think they must have specialised in bedroom furniture .
The handles are a particularly nice feature , and they’re reminiscent of Danish designs by Kai Kristiansen and others . The first thing we look for when judging quality is how the drawer of a chest or sideboard is made . Does it have dovetails ? Yes , that’s always good sign . Are they really neatly done , definitely , so another tick . Are the drawer interiors nice wood , yes , so another tick . All saying this wouldn’t have been a cheap piece when new . Much nicer quality than many Danish chests of drawers that you’ll see priced at noticeably higher prices than this , so we think it offers great value .
Many Danish 1960s teak chests have rather poorly made drawers in comparison to this piece and indeed in comparison to G Plan ones . Fixed legs are more stable than the removeable ones that are found on Danish ones .
We’re selling it in good vintage condition , but it could do with a light clean and oil to get it looking its best . No heat or water marks or bad scratches etc .
It’s a nice size , and could be used to stand a TV as it’s not too high .
