Fab A Younger large early 1960’s chest designed by John Herbert

Fab  A Younger large early 1960’s chest designed by John Herbert

It’s 152cms wide , 74.5cms high and 45.5cms deep ( plus projecting handles )

This is the first time we’ve been privileged to have this lovely scarce chest of drawers . We did see another one a year or two back but can’t remember where . We couldn’t find another on a Google picture search . It’s not shown in any of our catalogues ( 1964, 1965 , 1966 or 1968 nor in an earlier 1961 catalogue that we have access to ) . All A Younger furniture at this time is beautifully made , but this is a step up even for them . It’s not a showy piece , but it is quiet simple British Mid-Century furniture at it’s best .

The carcase and top are in teak , the drawer fronts are veneered in rosewood which was a mix that A Younger used on a lovely rare sideboard that was launched in 1960 and only made for a short time  . All A Younger furniture up until 1968 was particularly well made and aimed at wealthier upper middle class buyers . Their designer John Herbert was constantly designing new models and was one of the most talented British designers of the time . This lovely model will have been really expensive when new and made in very small numbers . It’s very large for a British  chest of drawers at the time and would look equally good in a living room as it would in a large bedroom .
