Heal’s Olive Walnut chest of drawers c 1960 . Produced for Heal’s by Loughborough Furniture and designed by Ward and Austin . We bought this stylish quality chest along with other items from the daughter of a family who purchased at Heal’s from c 1960 to c 1968 . This was the only item with a Heal’s label , and came with the original Loughborough Furniture catalogue from 1959 , where the range was described as being available from Heal + Son Ltd .
In 1959 this piece was priced at £26 12shillings 6 pence ( equivalent to over £500 today taking into account inflation ) , which was then quite a sizeable amount for a piece of bedroom furniture . It’s described as being Olive Walnut ( Muteneye ) finish with interiors of solid mahogany , with brass handles . We can find very little about Loughborough and their designers Ward and Austin , but they were presumably a small maker supplying pieces only to Heal’s and a few other top quality retailers .
An understated design of good quality in good vintage condition . The drawers were still lined with clean newspaper ( The Times ) from 1960 !!
