Late 1960s White + Newton teak dining table with removeable legs
White + Newton of Portsmouth were one of the few quality British makers to sometimes produce dining tables with removeable legs . As some doorways can be too narrow , and some properties in flats have awkward stairways this can make all the difference .
White + Newton used a particularly strong polyurethane varnish which takes a lot of work to remove , so if you want it cleaned and polished to remove marks and some scratches and also to get the extension leaf the same colour as the top this will take a couple of days work and cost around £250 in labour . It looks to us as if the leaf has never been used so it is in original unfaded condition .
It’s a lovely quality table and will seat 6 comfortably particularly when extended . To seat 8 you’d need 4 chairs on each side , and that would be rather tight . It’s 127cms long and 86cms wide in-extended and the leaf adds a further 63.5cms .
One family owner since new , it has been used but not abused , so there are signs of use after nearly 50 years . We bought it directly from the previous owner along with a White + Newton Petersfield sideboard . The original dining chairs had been replaced a few years ago , but it will look good with chairs we have by Dalescraft , Younger or McIntosh .
