Pair of Ercol elm Goldsmiths carver chairs c 1970
This lovely pair of Ercol Goldsmiths carver chairs came with a small dropleaf table and 4 chairs without the arms . We’re listing them separately as we don’t think the table is large enough to seat 6 comfortably , even though it was sold as a 6 seat table back in the day . They have their original Ercol label which dates them to the late 1960s . They’re in vintage condition , and there is a little damage as you’ll see from the photos , but its less obvious in the flesh . There is small slice of wood off one of the back legs , but it’s not enough to cause any structural problems . The scratches are noticeable if you look closely , but you have to look closely . They are around 50 years old , so you do have to expect some signs of use .
We have an Ercol 1970 catalogue , and this model no 369A then retailed a. t £10 8 shillings 8 pence , which in todays terms is over £160 each . However new Ercol elm dining chairs made in the UK today cost nearly 3 times that amount . Inflation figures are based on a basket of goods , some of which are today a lot cheaper in real terms than they were back in 1970 , others that take a lot of trained labour and scarcer materials ( such as nice solid elm ) are much more expensive .
