Rare A younger solid afromosia bench designed by John Herbert
These lovely benches don’t come up for sale very often . We were lucky to find 2 of them in 2017 which both sold very quickly , then recently sourced this one from the family of the original owner who had had it from new along with a matching refectory table and 4 chairs . The chairs sold to someone who came into the warehouse a few days later and the bench has been in the restoration queue for longer than expected !
It’s now been given a light clean and oil and the seat has been newly upholstered . The fabric is a Mainline Flax in a blue and green weave . A customer choose it for a sofa and we liked it so much that we ordered a little more .
Its 167cms in length and is great for seating kids if you want to get more round the table . Ask us about the table it came with .
The benches were probably designed as part of the Volnay range and appear in the 1964 Younger catalogue we have and in a 1961 catalogue that we’ve seen . Afromosia which is a dark teak was used by A Youngers and a few other top quality British makers in the late 1950s and early 1960s .
