Scarce Greaves and Thomas golden tola chest of drawers
This lovely chest dates to the early 1960s and is in fantastic vintage condition with no obvious marks to be seen . It looks as if it has just come from a showroom !
We’ve not seen a chest of drawers from this range before . It’s mainly coffee and lamp tables and the odd sideboard that we see of this design , and they’re usually either in a mahogany or dark tola finish . The original G and T label to the back says the finish is tola , but it’s a much lighter golden tola that looks more like a teak or Sapele and this is how most people would describe it as doesn’t look like the tola that is seen from G Plan and other makers of the time who used it frequently .
It’s a nice size at 89cms wide 74cms high and 43cms deep . It would look good in a hall or living room .
Greaves and Thomas were a good quality British maker in the 1960s who are best known for their sofas and sofa beds , but also produced some well made cabinet pieces for living rooms and dining rooms . We have a couple of their 1960s catalogues and they don’t seem to have made bedroom pieces so this will have been quite rare and produced for a living room . In around 1968 they were taken over by a cheaper maker called Schreiber and taken down market to stay competitive in a time of high inflation and a depressed economy .
