A Younger afromosia hall or writing table c1960
Designed by John J Herbert as part of Volnay Range for A Younger
The Volnay Range designed in 1956 was a ground breaking group of furniture for a British manufacturer at the time . This piece was described as a serving table , but often would have been bought for an entrance hall . Today it would also make a great small writing table or desk and would be ideal with a laptop computer .
The Volnay range was made from solid afromosia and was still being produced in 1964 . By that date most pieces would have been made using veneers rather than solid wood , but A Younger was a more expensive brand that until c 1968 put quality before price . Their pieces were always more expensive than larger firms such as G Plan , and a serving or hall table was an extra that most people didn’t buy at the time . This piece is not seen very often as a result .
In lovely clean vintage condition , afromosia is a particularly easy wood to keep looking good .
