A Younger teak Fonseca dining table designed by John J Herbert dating to the mid 1960s SOON .
NOT THIS ONE , BUT ANOTHER JUST ARRIVED AND WAITING TO BE CLEANED .
This smart dining table is a 6 seater table when fully extended , so ideal for a smaller dining area . This range appears in the 1964 catalogue we have , but was taken out of production by 1968 when the Younger range was considerably rationalised to reduce costs and prices to compete in a changing market .
Lovely simple detailing it looks particularly neat when in-extended . The quality of the timber and manufacture is excellent as you’d expect at this date from this premium British maker . Unlike many makers their tables and chairs were rarely labelled , and this is no exception .
James Herbert was a very accomplished designer who worked for A Younger from c 1955 to c 1970 . Little else seems to be known about him at present . Their 1964 catalogue says ” Although essentially modern in design Younger Furniture is based on the sound principles of traditional furniture . The natural finish of the carefully chosen woods , the many years of craftsmanship and the design of Younger Furniture has brought the Company six awards given by The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers for ” excellence of craftsmanship and for original and creative design ” .
The fold-over leaf has a brass catch to hold it in place so that it doesn’t move when the table is turned over as we found out when we tried to fully extend it ! No other dining table we’ve had has such a catch so it took us a while to realise that it had to be released !!
It’s one of the narrowest tables that you’ll find so ideal for smaller dining rooms .
