A Younger walnut large chest of drawers designed by John Herbert

A Younger walnut large chest of drawers designed by John Herbert

This is from Younger’s Russell bedroom range designed c 1960 , and produced in the early to mid 1960s . A Younger were a premium brand so their bedroom furniture is not found for sale in large numbers . The Russell range is in their 1964 catalogue described as being Natural French walnut with a matt finish . When we’ve inspected it we reckon that its made using solid walnut , walnut veneer and afromosia legs , with walnut and afromosia drawer interiors . It’s beautifully made and after a light clean and polish its a lovely lustrous honey colour .

Its 106.5cms wide , 91.5cms high and 45cms deep , so a really good size . Youngers catered to wealthier customers than G Plan and McIntosh so their chests are always larger than cheaper makes , which means that not only do they provide great storage , but they also look impressive , and will work equally well in a bedroom or living room .

Lovely simple lines that still look clean and modern today . The design means that a glass top could sit well and protect the top from scratches if you wanted to use it to stand a TV perhaps .

We also have the matching pair of bedside tables which are rarely found , and a dressing table also . The dressing table can be used as a shallow desk , but unfortunately has some damage to a handle which needs repairing . The bedside tables are being listed separately at £750 the pair , and the dressing table/desk will be £500 once restored . We will offer the full set at £1750 .

A Younger walnut large chest of drawers designed by John Herbert

John Herbert was a very accomplished designer of Mid-Century furniture for Youngers from the mid 1950s until the mid 1970s , when unfortunately he died prematurely . Unfortunately at this point Youngers didn’t have another designer of his calibre at this point , and the firm soon lost business as they had no new designs to make . We are currently doing more research on John who as one of the most successful  British furniture designers of his era deserves to be better known .
