Rarely seen Ib Kofod Larsen G Plan Danish Design dining chairs
We can only remember seeing one other set of these lovely stylish chairs before , and none came up on a Google image search . They’re not shown in the G Plan Danish Design catalogue which we have where 3 different designs are shown , but it is a general G Plan catalogue we have from circa 1963/4 . The design is in the G Plan archives at High Wycombe which can be accessed online . There is a Technical drawing of the design which is dated November 1962 , where they’re called ” New Danish Design chair ” model 4545 with a price of £11 15shillings , which is the same price as in the catalogue we have .
£11 15shillings is the equivalent of £249-25 according to the inflation adjustment calculator we use . Apart from 2 G Plan chairs with upholstered backs it was the most expensive of their Danish chairs at the time , but it was only 10% more than the Brazilia chair from their standard range .
The most commonly seen chairs from the Danish range can have structural issues as quite a few that we’ve seen have had repairs ( some badly done ) . This model is much stronger in design and also has a more generous seat than most chairs . Its a drop in seat which is much easier to re-upholster than the other Danish design models that Ib Kofod Larsen designed .
There are a number of commonly seen incorrect descriptions to be found on the internet regarding Ib Kofod Larsen and his designs for G Plan . He didn’t design their Fresco range , he didn’t design the circular seated dining chairs with the upholstered curved backs , and he didn’t design the Housemaster chair !
